Cornwall Sustainability Award
Working in close collaboration with designer Peter Skerrett, a redundant 1950s warehouse was transformed into an iconic community space with eco-credentials and more than its fair share of ‘feelgood factor’: photo-voltaic panels, power points for electric cars and underfloor heating. The building, which was commissioned by Robotmother and is a tribute to their sense of local vision, won the Best Built Retro-Fit Cornwall Sustainability Award 2015.
An Exceptional Track Record
Michael Hormann's work as an architect is underpinned by previous civil engineering experience in Germany. His expertise shines through in innovative, practical and beautiful designs. The portfolio below gives a taste of some of the projects Michael worked on and designs he created earlier in his career, prior to the establishment of Hormann Architects, including during his time as founder and director of Marraum.
Conversion of a bungalowCollaboration with Peter Skerrett to convert this single story bungalow into a double story house for a family. A lovely exterior appearance, more insualtion, better layout and more space. | Upgrade and conversionMetamorphosis of this hidden small place adjoining the rear of a house. For the previous owner I designed and managed the conversion of this 3 flat property into a single house. The solution was to construct a house in the existing house to stabilise the existing structure, which when we exposed all structures was in a dangerous non load bearing condition. Part of the project was to sort out damp issues and to restore unique features such as internal stonework and a deep stone faced well on the terrace behind the house. |

Conversion of World War II Barge
Whilst director of Marraum, Michael was responsible for the conversion of a 1941 concrete barge, an abandoned relic of World War II. The project was a collaboration with Mark and Loz Shipwrights, commissioned by Robotmother, who came up with the idea of transforming the barge into a highly desirable floating office
Michael's visionary architectural skills came to the fore in the creation of an innovative design, which was robust, stylish, and sustainable. The abandoned concrete hull of the historic barge was transformed into a unique and exciting office space, with biomass underfloor heating, a compost toilet, and aluminum windows. The unusual sloping roof panels and bespoke lighting designed by Eleanor Bell all contributed to the stunning, original design. The completed barge, a tribute to the skills of many local craftspeople, is moored at Jubilee Wharf and is known as 'The Brain of Brian'.
